On 2 October 2026, pupils from St Francis Secondary School will put environmental learning into practice through a clean-up initiative supported by Futura Investment Management, Nature Trust Malta and the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).
The programme will give children the opportunity to explore the natural environment, understand the impact of litter and work together to care for it. Following an introduction and safety briefing, pupils will join supervised groups to collect waste across the designated clean-up areas.
Alongside the wider clean-up, children will use sand sifters to search for nurdles—tiny plastic pellets that can be difficult to spot among the sand. This activity will encourage them to look more closely at pollution and discover why even the smallest pieces are worth collecting.
Teamwork with something to celebrate
A friendly competition will recognise the children’s efforts, with participants working in teams of 10. Garmin watches will be awarded to the first-place team, with zoo visits among the other prizes. Host Claire Agius Ordway will present the awards, celebrating the winning teams’ achievements.
The programme will also include environmental talks, refreshments and an appearance by Xummiemu, adding to a morning built around learning, participation and teamwork.
Behind the preparations
Futura’s team has been working with the event partners to coordinate the programme, prepare branded T-shirts and caps, and arrange the competition prizes. A promotional video provides an introduction to the initiative, which has also been featured in Times of Malta.
For Futura, the purpose is to give children a practical experience of environmental responsibility: an opportunity to see a problem, take action and recognise what they can achieve together.

We will share photographs, competition results and the clean-up’s final collection totals here on our website and on Futura’s LinkedIn page.
